Bilateral Cochlear Implant Studies

There are approximately 4000 bilateral cochlear implant recipients in the world today.  Of this number, over half are children. 

Bilateral Cochlear Implant studies are taking place in the U.S. and Europe and include:

• Adult simultaneous (two CI’s during same surgery) and sequential studies (one CI followed by another in separate surgery)
• Pediatric sequential study (ongoing)
• UK— focused on sequential implantation in adultsGermany—studied sequential and simultaneous implantation in adults
  Also studying simultaneous implantation in children—longitudinal with matched unilaterals (no data yet).
